Marquette General Health System

Marquette General Health Systemreaches throughout the county and much of the Peninsula from the 335-bed, federally-designed Regional Referral Center located on College Avenue in the City of Marquette. Marquette General Health System, also referred to as MGHS, has 200 doctors practicing in 64 specialties from general medicine to extremely advanced cancer, heart, and brain specialities.

Marquette General Hospital, the County's largest hospital, was named one of the nation's 100 top hospitals for cardiovascular care many years in a row. The Neuroscience Center goes beyond brain surgery to join scientists at Northern Michigan University in brain tumor research. In cancer treatment, MGHS, is an affiliate of the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit. This puts MGHS in the center of research and treatment, and gives access to clinical trials limited to the 39 National Cancer Institutes designated centers.

MGHS performs more than 9,000 surgeries a year, and its Emergency Department is a Level II Trauma Center. This distinction by the American College of Surgeons is the highest designation possible outside a major population center.

Medical Care Access Coalition

Unique to our county are the volunteers and services of the Medical Care Access Coalition, also known as MCAC. Obtaining a 501 (c) 3 status in 2001, MCAC coordinates volunteered and donated health-care to uninsured, low-income, Marquette County non-elderly adults. 100% of all primary care providers in Marquette County volunteer to see patients as well as a majority of speciality providers and both county hospitals donate needed laboratory work. MCAC is fortunate to have many volunteers, both in office and serving on the MCAC board. Support comes from both county hospitals, grants, and local donations. Its own office and clinic space is donated by the Upper Peninsula Medical Center. MCAC has provided access to health-care to over 3,000 people since its inception and is a national model for other access to care programs.

In addition, there are many auxiliary services including laboratories, radiology labs, and a pharmacy. There is a pleasant lunchroom and a cheerful coffee bar that greets visitors in the main foyer.
