SUPERIOR DOME
One wouldn’t expect to see the world’s largest wooden
dome stadium sitting in the City limits of Marquette, but nothing
here is quite as expected. Built on Northern Michigan University’s
(NMU) campus for the Olympic Education Center and NMU’s football
program, the Superior
Dome hosts special events most every weekend of the year including
trade shows, track meets, conventions, youth soccer, and NMU’s
commencement ceremonies. The gray outer shell of the Superior
Dome does not hint at the beauty found within. The dome was
made of 781 Douglas fir beams, measures 156 feet from floor to
top, has 108 miles of fir decking, and permanent seating for 8000.
Made up of wooden timbers, the acres inside are spectacular. Walkers
can utilize the perimeter and view the special showcases including
one on John Voelker, a Michigan State Supreme Court Judge and author.
