MARQUETTE – UP Health System – Marquette and the City of Marquette have finalized the purchase of the Roundhouse Property in south Marquette, paving the way for construction of UP Health System’s new medical campus.

The health system completed the real estate transaction Monday, following the City Commission voting to approve both the sale and the designation of the site as a Brownfield property last week.

UP Health System Regional President Jim Bogan described the finalization of the property purchase as “a perfect blending of cooperation between our health system and city administrative and elected officials.” He added, “From the time we expressed interest in keeping our new hospital within the city, Marquette officials have been exemplary in their professionalism and enthusiasm for the future of our new medical campus.”

The completed purchase includes the 37-acre site located between Baraga and Washington streets, commonly known as the “Roundhouse Property.” Situated close to downtown and just one mile from Northern Michigan University, the property offers easy access to the new hospital campus from various main and secondary roads.  It also is in close proximity to many community amenities.

The Roundhouse site was used for industrial purposes for generations. Redeveloping the land as a site for a new medical campus will offer major benefits to the Marquette community and add to the ongoing revitalization of the downtown area.

UP Health System – Marquette’s new $300-plus million medical campus will include a state-of-the-art, 265-bed hospital and 80,000-square foot medical office building.  Site and facility designs are nearing completion, with groundbreaking slated for spring 2016. Occupancy of the new campus is targeted for late 2018.

“This is such an exciting day for us, for the leaders of Marquette, and for the community,” said Tom Butler, Jr., chief financial officer of LifePoint Health’s Eastern Group. UP Health System – Marquette is part of Duke LifePoint Healthcare, a joint venture of Duke University Health System and LifePoint Health, which committed $300 million in capital for this project.  “We are so grateful for the collaboration and support Marquette city leaders have shown us throughout this process and are eager to begin building what we know will be world-class healthcare facilities.”

UP Health System – Marquette will continue to occupy its current facilities at the College Avenue location until the new hospital is constructed and operational.  Hospital leaders will continue to work closely with city officials and the community to explore future uses of its current property.
