WILDLIFE
The Moose are Loose!
In 1985 and 1987, 59 moose were re-introduced to Marquette
County. Delivered by helicopter from Canada, these moose
have reproduced and formed a new family that wanders
miles and miles across the Peninsula. The largest percentage
of reported sightings still centers around their drop
off point along the Huron Grade near Michigamme. Adult
moose can weigh up to 1000 pounds. Their mating season
occurs in September and October and caution is strongly
advised during this time. Moose cows give birth in June
to single or twin calves that weigh approximately 30
pounds.
The Rest of the Pack
Whitetail deer are commonly found throughout Marquette
County. Sightings are usually around dusk along many
of the road sides. A popular setting for viewing or photographing
deer is found on the west side of the City of Marquette
at Presque Isle Park.Deer season is November 15 through
November 30.
Wolves are making a comeback in the Upper Peninsula. Although
extremely rare to see, their footprints and voices are
seen and heard more frequently than ever.
Other wildlife that you may encounter during your visit
to Marquette County include fishers, pine martens, black
bears, fox and a wide variety of birds. The bird sighting
