U.P. Energy Users CoalitionU P Energy Users Coalition (4)

The Upper Peninsula is facing an energy crisis with the impending retirement of the Presque Isle Power Plant, EPA regulatory requirements, changes to the Local Balancing Authority (LBA) and other factors that may dramatically impact the cost of doing business or turning on the lights at home.

This issue is a top priority for the State of Michigan, utilities, regulators and transmission companies who all have a role to play. What seems to be missing is a collective voice of those that use and pay for power at the end of the day – the energy users.  A coalition of users with a single voice can better collaborate with those involved to find the best solution for the region.

The U.P. Energy Users Coalition allows stakeholders to:

  • Better address the energy issue if concerned parties are working together
  • Increase the likelihood that regional input is factored into any strategy
  • Increase the coherence, strength and effectiveness of the region’s response to the crisis
  • Open and candid discussions from a “users” only group

Concerned private sector companies and large energy users in Region 1 want to share a single voice for the Upper Peninsula regarding the future of energy availability, reliability and affordability.  This group, co-chaired by NMU President Fritz Erickson and MTU President Glenn Mroz, is in the process of recruiting members who will be negatively affected by this energy crisis and want to work collaboratively to the  solve short and long term issues being faced.
