Honor Credit Union and Negaunee High School Unveil New ‘Art in the Park’ Installation
June 26, 2025
Negaunee, MI – The second installation of the Art in the Park program, a collaboration between Honor Credit Union in Negaunee, Negaunee High School, and the City of Negaunee, was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 25 at the Jim Thomas Pavilion in Jackson Mine Park.
The Art in the Park program was developed by Honor Credit Union with the goal of empowering student artists and enhancing community spaces. Through their high school art classes, students submit mural concepts, which are reviewed by their teacher and Honor Credit Union, with input from the city.
Selected murals are painted by students and displayed on double-sided kiosks constructed by the Negaunee High School shop class. Each kiosk includes a protective roof and plexiglass panels to shield the artwork from moisture.
Honor Credit Union plans to work with the school to rotate the artwork over time, giving new students the opportunity to participate. When murals are replaced, the original artwork will be returned to the student artists.
“At Honor Credit Union, building stronger communities is at the heart of everything we do,” said Honor Credit Union Community Development Officer, Jamie Gollakner. “Our support of the Art in the Park program is one way we’re turning that belief into action. By partnering with Negaunee High School and the City of Negaunee, we’re helping students develop new skills, express their creativity, and make a lasting impact through public art. Together, we’re creating vibrant spaces that connect people and inspire pride in the place we call home.”
The City of Negaunee provided space for the kiosks along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, allowing for easy public access and visibility of the artwork.

Champion Township Celebrates the Grand Opening of New Township Hall with a Ribbon Cutting
June 18, 2025
Champion, MI – The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted Champion Township in celebrating the grand opening of the new Township Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 18. The new facility is located at 1071 Highway US 41 in Champion. An open house followed the ceremony, allowing the public an opportunity to tour the space.
The new Township Hall replaces Champion Township’s previous office, a small, aging building that once operated as a restaurant. That space, composed of just two open rooms, was not ideal for office or meeting use and had deteriorated significantly. Facing the choice of investing in costly repairs or seeking a better solution, township officials identified another township-owned building, a former DNR field office and later home to the Champion Lions Club, as a strong candidate for renovation. The structure was larger and more sound, offering a solid foundation for transformation into a more functional municipal facility.
In late 2023, the Township Board officially decided to move forward with renovating the former Lions Club building. Plans were developed, financing was secured, and a general contractor was selected. Construction began in late summer of 2024 and continued through the fall, winter, and spring of 2025.
“We’re proud to introduce a more functional and welcoming space for the community,” said Township Supervisor Mike Simula. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and are excited to begin operations in our new hall.”
The renovated hall now features individual offices for the Township Supervisor, Clerk, and Treasurer, a larger meeting room, a small kitchenette, and fully accessible restrooms. The building is equipped with air conditioning and will include a backup generator to ensure uninterrupted operation during power outages.
The architectural plans were developed by Jim Nankervis, and the renovation was completed by HandiPro, LLC. Grant funding to support the project was secured from the West End Health Foundation.
For more information about the Champion Township Hall, please contact Mike Simula, Township Supervisor, at supervisor@championmichigan.org.

City of Negaunee Celebrates the Grand Opening of New Substation with a Ribbon Cutting
May 27, 2025
Negaunee, MI –
The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 27, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Irontown Substation, located at 504 Peninsula Street in Negaunee.
The Negaunee Electric Department, the community’s locally owned, not-for-profit utility, and the City of Negaunee first announced plans for the south side infrastructure expansion in summer 2023, following project approval earlier that year. The new substation includes two 7.5 MVA transformers supplying four circuits, marking the City’s first municipally-owned substation.
The Irontown Substation will alleviate strain on the City’s aging infrastructure, reduce costs and liability, and support future growth, as the existing substation is nearing capacity.
“We’re thrilled to officially open the new Irontown Substation,” said Nate Heffron, Negaunee City Manager. “With this in place, we can support city expansion while reducing reliability issues caused by the aging infrastructure of the previous facility.”
The total project investment was $7.4 million, including $5.4 million for the new substation and $2.0 million for upgraded distribution lines that connect the substation to the system. These enhancements provide direct access to the main transmission lines supplying power to the area.
“Because the City of Negaunee owns this substation, we will have more control over our own power,” said Electric Department Supervisor Mark Wainio. “We’re proud to implement this new substation, keeping power safe, affordable and reliable for Negaunee’s residents and local businesses.”
The previous substation, located at the corner of US-41 and Baldwin Street, will be decommissioned and removed once the Irontown Substation is fully operational.
For more information about the Irontown Substation, contact Nate Heffron, Negaunee City Manager, at (906) 475-7700 ext. 11.

March 25, 2025
Gwinn, MI – The Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP) recently assisted with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport (SAW) to celebrate the completed expansion of the waiting area. Elements & Bodywork Celebrates its Rebranding with a Ribbon Cutting
February 7, 2025
Ishpeming, MI – The Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP) assisted Elements & Bodywork in celebrating its official ribbon cutting on Friday, February 7, at its location on 118 East Division Street, Ishpeming.
Elements & Bodywork is a dynamic business dedicated to promoting holistic healing and wellness. With a focus on the connection between mind and body, the business offers specialized services to support individuals on their healing journey. Through a range of massage therapy techniques, including Swedish Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, and Medical Massage, Elements & Bodywork provides natural, expert-driven approaches to pain relief and emotional well-being.
“Our goal is to help individuals heal through various modalities, whether they are dealing with chronic or acute pain,” said business owner Esther Ruggles. “Swedish Massage, in particular, helps regulate the nervous system, leading to better decision-making, a calm mindset, and improved sleep.”
In addition to its in-office services, Elements & Bodywork is launching a Mental Health Mondays Walk, a community initiative taking place every Monday at 6:00 p.m. This walk is designed to promote healthy coping mechanisms, positive mental health, and a sense of community care.
While Elements & Bodywork initially planned to extend the Rare Earth Goods art co-op into an online marketplace for local products, the decision has been made to pause this aspect of the business. “I need to be realistic about what I can handle and focus on the medical massage aspect of the business,” said Ruggles. “However, if there is enough community interest and involvement, this initiative could still move forward in the future. Those interested in supporting this effort are encouraged to reach out.”
