MARQUETTE – The Career Technical Education (CTE) Committee of Marquette & Alger Counties was selected from a pool of nominations to present at the Governor’s Economic Summit early last week in Grand Rapids.  The CTE Committee represented Region 1 making a five minute presentation in front of 700 attendees including business, education and economic development leaders from across the state.  Presenting on behalf of the committee were Derek Bush, Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP) Business Development Representative, Stu Bradley, Community Organizer, Brian Sarvello, Marquette-Alger RESA CTE Director, and Dale Kapla, Assistant Provost at NMU.

The CTE committee is advocating for a middle college, allowing students to receive a high school diploma and associates degree in five years at no cost. Additionally the group also discussed NMU’s Automotive Service Technician Program and Geometry in Construction class at Ishpeming High School. The goal of the committee is to increase the quality and quantity of CTE programs in the Upper Peninsula.

“What a great opportunity for our CTE Committee to be able to tell the Governor, and 700 other leaders from around the State, the actions that we are taking to help our kids find the right career path,” said Stu Bradley.  “I think we did a good job of addressing the need for more flexibility in the state curriculum, to allow our kids to take CTE and STEM courses while in high school…courses that lead to a good job.”
