Skanska Closner Selected as Contractor for Marquette Hospital

Plans to develop $300 million hospital campus move forward
Marquette, Mich. (March 24, 2015) – UP Health System – Marquette today announced that Skanska Closner has been selected as the general contractor for the construction of the new hospital campus.
With the selection of the contractor, UP Health System – Marquette is now ready to move forward with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art, 265-bed hospital and 80,000-square foot medical office building. The new hospital campus will be located at the former Roundhouse/MSC property located near the US-41 corridor and Baraga Avenue adjacent to downtown Marquette.
Skanska Closner is a joint venture partnership with strong ties to the Marquette community. Skanska USA is one of the largest construction and development companies and one of the top healthcare builders in the U.S. Skanska constructed two hospital facilities in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan: Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace and Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse. Closner Construction, a local contractor based in Marquette, provides construction services throughout the Upper Peninsula, including previous expansion and renovation projects for UP Health System – Marquette.
The Skanska Closner team is made up of experienced project management and field supervision staff with the expertise to meet the requirements of this important project, including those related to the brownfield designation of the construction site.
Duke LifePoint Healthcare, which owns and operates UP Health System – Marquette, is investing more than $300 million in the project.

Skanska Closner will work in collaboration with Gresham, Smith and Partners (GS&P), the architect for the new facilities. Groundbreaking on the project is planned for spring 2016, and construction of the campus is expected to be completed in early 2018.

UP Health System – Marquette will continue to occupy its current facilities at the College Avenue location until the new hospital is constructed and operational. Hospital leaders will continue to work closely with the city officials and the community to explore future uses of its current property and facilities once the hospital campus is relocated.
