Reflecting on the significance of her journey, Sarah shared, “Native Nails is a reflection of my roots and heritage, a place where I feel a deep connection to my community. Rosemary and Gary’s belief in me made this possible, and I am honored to continue serving Ishpeming and sharing my culture with those interested.”

Goldie’s Celebrates Store Opening with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
October 25, 2024

Ishpeming, MI – The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted Goldie’s in celebrating the opening of their business with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at their new downtown location, 212 Cleveland Avenue, Ishpeming, MI 49849. The ceremony took place on Friday, October 25th.

Goldie’s, a new vintage boutique, is the dream of sisters Cassandra and Alexa, who have already established themselves in the vintage community by selling unique items at The Better Half in Marquette. Now, they’re bringing their passion to Ishpeming. The store itself is a homage to local history, as the pair discovered that the building they are located in was a business called Goldie’s in the 1950s. Inspired by this piece of history, they decided to revive the name to honor the past and bring their vision to life in a perfect blend of old and new.

The boutique will offer a carefully curated selection of vintage home goods, clothing, new artisan pieces, and one-of-a-kind embroidery and screen printing on vintage fabrics. The sisters also plan for the store to serve as a community hub by hosting creative workshops and classes, such as flower-making, sewing, yoga, and crafting sessions.

“We are so excited to bring Goldie’s back to downtown Ishpeming and can’t wait to share our love of vintage with the community,” said Cassandra Sturos, Goldie’s Co-owner. “Our vision is to not only sell beautiful items but to create a space where the community can come together for creative and fun events.”

Michigamme Township Celebrates 50 Years of Park Progress and Community Vision
October 17, 2024

Michigamme Township Park Ribbon CuttingMichigamme, MIThe Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted Michigamme Township in celebrating their 50-year anniversary and the completion of their recent revitalization project. The revitalization, funded with assistance from the DNR’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, allowed the township to modernize the park’s combined tennis and pickleball courts, the basketball court, and improve accessibility with disability-friendly features.

The ribbon cutting took place at the park located on the shores of Lake Michigamme, just off U.S. Highway 41 in Michigamme on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

The vision for the project began fifty years ago, in 1974, when the vision of a small township nestled along the shores of picturesque Lake Michigamme set the stage for a community legacy that continues to thrive today. With their first Department of Natural Resources (DNR) grant, the Michigamme Township Board laid the foundation for the park, a serene public space offering residents and visitors alike a place to gather, play, and enjoy nature’s beauty.

Thanks to the foresight and dedication of the 1974 Township Board: Supervisor John Olson, Clerk Jean Howe, Treasurer Carol Luke, and Trustees Wendelin Perry and C. Stewart Saari, the park began the journey toward what it is today. Their leadership, coupled with the overwhelming support of Township residents, paved the way for a park that has grown into a beloved space in the community, overlooking the waters of Lake Michigamme.

Now, in 2024, Michigamme Township celebrates 50 years of progress and community-driven improvement. The park’s recent significant revitalization was possible due to a grant secured from the Michigan DNR’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, allowing the township to modernize the park. The improvements honor the commitment to inclusion, ensuring the park remains a place for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.

“We’re proud to continue the work that started in 1974, and we’re thankful to everyone who has contributed through the years,” said Kathleen Frisk, Michigamme Township Trustee.

Over the decades, the park has benefited from the generous donations of community members. In particular, Robert and Mary Mercier donated playground equipment, helping to create a fun and safe environment for children to enjoy. Dave Meyer along with his wife Lillian, a prior Michigamme resident, planted trees in honor of Arbor Day over the course of many years that now stand tall to provide shade in the summer months.

The Township extends heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to the park’s growth, whether through donations, time, or effort. From playground equipment to trees, every contribution has played a role in shaping Michigamme’s park into the cherished community space it is today.

As Michigamme Township looks ahead to the future, the spirit of that original 1974 vision remains strong: to create a space where nature and community come together, where the beauty of Lake Michigamme can be enjoyed by all, and where the Township’s legacy of care and collaboration continues to shine.

Iron Ore Heritage Trail Celebrates Completed Boardwalk with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
October 11, 2024

Iron Ore Heritage Trail Boardwalk Ribbon Cutting imageNegaunee, MI – The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted the Iron Ore Heritage Trail (IOHT) in celebrating the completion of its newly constructed boardwalk with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project, funded in part by a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant, represents a notable enhancement to the trail system, which plays a key role in connecting the community to the region’s natural and historical treasures.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is proud to once again be a partner with the Iron Ore Heritage Trail for the development of the Marshland Boardwalk Project by providing a $218,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. Since 2009, this has been the Iron Ore Heritage Trail’s seventh Trust Fund Grant for land acquisition, construction of trails and amenities along the 47-mile route which have received over $1.1 million dollars from this grant source.

According to the Michigan DNR, the grant is supported by revenue from state-owned oil, gas, and mineral extraction, with proceeds directed toward public outdoor recreation development. These funds help support projects such as this boardwalk, enhancing outdoor recreation and conservation efforts across the state.

The ribbon-cutting event took place at the boardwalk located on the Iron Ore Heritage trail, between Co. Rd. 492 and Co. Rd. 480 in Negaunee on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

“This boardwalk has been a goal of the IOHT Recreation Authority since 2010. It was the vision of the board and dedication of Carol Fulsher, IOHT admin predecessor, who secured the funding that made it a reality,” said Bob Hendrickson, Trail Administrator for the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority. This boardwalk marks another milestone for the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, which connects outdoor recreation enthusiasts with the rich history and scenic beauty of the region. The new boardwalk is designed to provide a safe, accessible, and scenic route for trail users while preserving the surrounding environment.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of this beautiful new boardwalk, which not only enhances the Iron Ore Heritage Trail but also strengthens our community’s connection to the stunning natural and historical landscapes of our region,” stated Hendrickson. “This project embodies our commitment to providing safe and accessible outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. We extend our gratitude to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and all our partners for their support in making this vision a reality.”

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates Completion of Jackson Mine Park Playground in Negaunee, Michigan
October 2, 2024

Negaunee, MI — The City of Negaunee is thrilled to announce the completion of the highly anticipated Jackson Mine Park Playground. The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted with a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the occasion on October 2, 2024.

The playground, located between Tobin Street and the Jim Thomas Pavilion, offers a thoughtfully designed space where families can gather, and parents can easily keep an eye on their children during events and activities at the nearby pavilion.

“This is an ideal location, providing a perfect sightline for parents to watch their children while enjoying family gatherings,” said City Manager Nate Heffron. “The playground is a major improvement for our community, and we’re excited to see families enjoy it for years to come.”

The project originated after the city was awarded a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Trust Fund Grant in 2017 for the Jim Thomas Pavilion. Inspired by this, a group of residents began exploring the potential of building a playground adjacent to the pavilion. A subsequent MDNR Trust Fund Grant secured the Jackson Mine Park Playground funding, turning this dream into a reality.

Community support played a critical role in the project’s success. The Negaunee Lions Club generously contributed $10,000 from the Lions Community Enrichment Fund, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) partnered with the city for a crowdfunding campaign through Patronicity. The campaign raised over $50,000 from the community, which the MEDC matched for a total of $100,000.

The City of Negaunee thanks all the partners, donors, and residents who contributed to this project. The new Jackson Mine Park Playground stands as a symbol of community spirit and collaboration.

June 27, 2024

Ishpeming, MI –The Lake Superior Community Partnership helped Native Nails Salon celebrate its 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of dedicated service to Ishpeming and beyond. Founded by Sarah Garver shortly after graduating from Main Street School of Cosmetology in February 2011, the salon has grown from humble beginnings to a thriving local business.

To mark this momentous occasion, Native Nails invites the public to its 10-year Anniversary Celebration on July 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at its salon located at 209 S Main Street in Ishpeming. The event will take place during the Festival of Treasures in Ishpeming and will feature a luncheon, giveaways from local businesses, music, and more.

Native Nails Salon began in Baraga, where it operated for four years before relocating to Ishpeming. This move was made possible by the support of two incredible individuals: Gary Nelson, the owner of the 209 Main Street building, and the late Miss Rosemary Strom, whose belief in the salon’s potential was instrumental. “Miss Rosemary Strom believed I was the one who would bring the history back to Ishpeming,” Sarah commented. “She was right, and here we are ten years later.”

Starting with just one nail station, a rocking chair, and twenty-five polishes, Native Nails Salon has grown significantly. Today, the salon boasts four nail stations, three jet spa massage pedicure chairs, two hair stations, three types of tanning beds, a massage room, and an impressive collection of over 1,500 regular and gel polishes. The salon specializes in hand-painted nail art, eagerly taking on challenges from clients who bring inspirational pictures.

“Our goal has always been to provide a relaxing and valued experience for everyone who visits,” Sarah explains. “We dedicate an hour to each client for their requested service, ensuring they feel appreciated and pampered.”

The salon now has a team of four, including Sarah, two nail apprentices, and a talented hair stylist with 18 years of experience. In addition to nail and hair services, Native Nails Salon proudly displays Native American beadwork that is available for purchase, showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage.

“We enjoy and appreciate our loyal clients, some of whom have been with us since the beginning, and we love to meet new people. We are always here for your nail care and hair therapy,” says Sarah.

Native Nails Salon keeps its clients informed and engaged through an active Facebook page, updated weekly with the latest work and special offers. Appointments can be scheduled through the Facebook page or by calling (906)395-1349 for nails and (906)236-4045 for hair. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with Saturdays available by appointment only.

Inspire to Aspire and We Care What You Wear has been the salon’s motto, reflecting its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Native Nails Salon looks forward to continuing to serve the community for many more years to come.

The Historic Mather Inn Celebrates Grand Reopening in Ishpeming

June 20, 2024

Ishpeming, MI – The Historic Mather Inn, now known as The Mather, proudly announces its grand reopening after a significant revitalization effort. New owners, Bill Anderson Jr. and Lisa Petersen, launched this journey in July 2022 to restore and enhance the historic building, which had not been approved for occupancy by the county for the past 25 years. The Lake Superior Community Partnership and local dignitaries assisted in the celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, marking the official reopening of this historic establishment.

The Mather’s revitalization includes refurbishing the ten existing apartments on the third and fourth floors and adding six new units on the second floor, completed by General Contractor GE Builders. Currently, three of the sixteen units are available as furnished short-term rentals, offering weekly to monthly stays.

The main/first floor of The Mather now features an array of hospitality services. The grand ballroom is perfect for weddings, receptions, banquets, business gatherings, and parties of all sizes, with an event bar on the east end catering to larger events. The grand lobby, housing a 1909 Star Concert Grand Piano generously donated by Jim and Sandy Sodergren, serves as a performance space for local musicians.

The original “gentlemen’s” bar has been modestly renovated to become The Mather Lounge, an old-fashioned craft cocktail lounge that offers a prohibition-era experience with a menu of fresh, classic, and unique handcrafted cocktails and mocktails.

Future plans for the west end of the main floor include potential “feel-good” businesses such as retail spaces, a florist, and a massage therapist.

The next major step in The Mather’s revitalization is the full renovation and expansion of the basement area, soon to be known as The Tap Room. This 4,000-square-foot space will offer a bar with 24 taps for local and regional craft brews, fine wines, and will reintroduce the famous bird baths on Thursdays. The Tap Room will feature a stage for live music and a wood-fired oven for gourmet pizzas and upscale bar food.

“We were drawn to this project because of the rich history that the building holds and the important role it has played in the community,” said Bill and Lisa. “We wanted to bring this back and love sharing our region’s rich history with others. We are overwhelmed by the public’s support, excitement, and the stories they have shared.”

The public is invited to follow The Mather on Facebook for scheduled musicians, upcoming wine tastings, and whisky/bourbon tasting events. For more information, contact The Mather at thematherevents@gmail.com, call 906-204-8350 or 906-250-1352 and look for its website launching soon.

Marquette County, MI – Lyon Quality Assurance (LyonQA), a pioneering force in tailored quality assurance solutions, announced its grand opening. The Lake Superior Community Partnership assisted in the celebration by hosting a ribbon cutting on April 25.
LyonQA is an all-woman, remote-first company based in Marquette County. They are dedicated to empowering organizations to achieve excellence in software delivery through tailored quality assurance solutions, ensuring unparalleled performance and reliability.

Cotopaxi Lyon founded LyonQA, believing that quality assurance (QA) can and should be done better. Cotopaxi stated, “If we stop buying into the frenetic ethos of the tech world — good old ‘go fast and break stuff — we can slow down to do things right. By slowing down, we bring curiosity and empathy back to tech – key elements that we’re losing in this rapidly evolving digital age. LyonQA slows down to bring our clients better results.”

Jes Solomon, the QA Director, and Yana Beeker, the Business Development Manager, are joining Cotopaxi at LyonQA. They share the vision of a human-centric company orienting its services around high-quality, honest, strong internal and external relationships. They are committed to showing the tech world how QA should be embodied.

LyonQA levels up quality assurance by offering custom QA solutions, from integrated manual software testing to quality consulting. By identifying issues before they become code, they serve as the user’s voice during planning stages, flag bugs pre-deployment, and advise on process changes to ensure overall development quality. LyonQA understands that their role is to question and understand what is provided to them and to ask what is missing and outdated. They help clients enhance their overall product by thinking outside of the box.

LyonQA understands that software development is fundamentally an ideation and implementation process. One that requires effective, empathic communication and processes to translate the idea into a product efficiently. Their team helps shift development focus from rushing to results to verifying that the development process has included necessary steps for questioning and clarification. This shift enhances overall development speed, reduces unnecessary money wasted on refactors and bug fixes, and ensures the end user receives the highest quality product.
